چکیده
This paper focuses on the interpretation of what has been considered an expletive marker in grammar Greek nominal domain: plural number mass nouns. We present results experimental investigation nouns by native speakers this language, and we propose a speech act analysis according to which at time producing utterances that contain speaker performs two acts: assertion expressive (s)he publicly commits emotive stance dislike towards expressed proposition φ. is analyzed as judgment with respect φ, expression directly transfers speaker's emotion from conversation into addressee's common ground.

Mass nouns and plural logic
A dilemma put forward by Schein (1993) and Rayo (2002) suggests that, in order to characterize the semantics of plurals, we should not use predicate logic, but plural logic, a formal language whose terms may refer to several things at once. We show that a similar dilemma applies to mass nouns. If we use predicate logic and sets when characterizing their semantics, we arrive at a Russellian para...
متن کاملThe Interpretation of Relational Nouns
This paper 1 decdbes a computational treatment of the semantics of relational nouns. It covers relational nouns such as "sister.and "commander; and focuses especially on a particular subcategory of them, called function nouns ( 'speed; "distance', "rating'). Relational nouns are usually viewed as either requiring non-compositional semantic interpretation, or causing an undesirable proliferation...
متن کاملCount Nouns – Mass Nouns Neat Nouns – Mess Nouns
In this paper I propose and formalize a theory of the mass-count distinction in which the denotations of count nouns are built from non-overlapping generators, while the denotations of mass nouns are built from overlapping generators. Counting is counting of generators, and it will follow that counting is only correct on count denotations. I will show that the theory allows two kinds of mass no...
متن کاملLearnability and generalisation of Arabic broken plural nouns
The noun plural system in Modern Standard Arabic lies at a nexus of critical issues in morphological learnability. The suffixing "sound" plural competes with as many as 31 non-concatenative "broken" plural patterns. Our computational analysis of singular-plural pairs in the Corpus of Contemporary Arabic explores what types of linguistic information are statistically relevant to morphological ge...
متن کاملStatistical Interpretation of Compound Nouns
We present a method for detecting compound nominalisations in open data, and deriving an interpretation for them. Discovering the semantic relationship between the modifier and head noun in a compound nominalisation is first construed as a twoway disamiguation task between an underlying subject or object semantic relation between a head noun and its modifier, and second as a three-way task betw...
